In stone crushing and screening plants, motor selection is based on the crusher's capacity, the hardness of the processed material and the need for continuous 24/7 operation. High starting torque, resistance to impact and vibration, and a robust frame are critically important in these applications.

Technical criteria for selection

  • Power (kW): start from the power recommended by the crusher manufacturer and leave a reasonable margin for variations in material hardness and feed rate.
  • Speed: crushers are usually driven by 4- or 6-pole motors through belts and pulleys; the pulley ratio is calculated from the required crusher shaft speed.
  • Starting torque: since the crusher may have to start loaded, the motor's starting torque and the starting method (star-delta, soft starter, inverter) should be assessed together.
  • Duty type: continuous operation is based on the S1 duty cycle.

Environment and mechanical strength

Crushing plants operate in heavy dust, outdoors, under sun and rain. That makes at least IP55 protection, class F insulation and a sturdy housing essential. A cast iron frame dampens shock and vibration well. Belt tension puts a radial load on the bearings, so the shaft and bearing arrangement must also be considered, and the fan cover and cooling fins should be cleaned regularly to prevent dust build-up.

The DRG Motor approach

DRG Motor's cast iron-bodied, IP55-protected and class F insulated motors are designed to withstand the demanding conditions of crusher applications. Vibration motors for screens are also part of the range. If you share the crusher type, pulley diameters and capacity, we can work out the right power and speed together.
