In a furniture or joinery shop, the woodworking machine motor takes part in every step that turns a log into timber, timber into sized parts and parts into assembled furniture. What spins the saw, the cutterblock, the moulder spindle, the sanding drum, the extraction fan and the conveyor belt is mostly a three-phase induction motor. This category is about the electric motor working on these machines, not the machines themselves.

DRG Motor is a manufacturer, supplier and seller of electric motors. Our supply is the standard IEC motor fitted to the machine; we do not sell the machine itself, its gearbox, hydraulic unit or pump, fan impeller, drive (inverter), electro-spindle or servo. The models are listed on Buy Electric Motors Online.

From log to furniture: which motor on which machine?

Wood passes through a chain of machine groups. Each group’s motor carries a different load:

Sawing, ripping and planing after drying

The log is first broken down into planks and boards on a band mill or a multi-rip saw, where a large main motor starts against a heavy load. Dried timber is flattened on the surface planer and brought to size on the thicknesser. On both, the cutterblock is turned by a two- or four-pole motor through a belt; the thicknesser also carries a small feed motor.

Sizing, machining and edges

Board material is divided into sized parts on a sliding table saw or a panel sizing saw. Moulders, CNC routers and multi-boring machines cut profiles, grooves and connection holes; the edge bander covers the edges. Several of these machines carry high-speed electro-spindles and servo axes, which are not standard motors.

Sanding, assembly, chips and handling

The wide belt sander prepares the surface for finishing; presses and conveyors run on the assembly line. Two services follow the whole shop: the extraction system that pulls away chips and dust, and the conveyors that carry timber, boards and parts between machines. Fan and conveyor motors are often the longest-running motors in the plant.

Motor power on woodworking machines in the market

A) Sample values from maker catalogues; the exact value is on your own machine’s nameplate:

Power depends on cutting height, working width and depth of cut. The same machine is often offered with different motors, so on replacement the old nameplate is the reference.

Common points in motor selection for wood machines

High speed and pulleys

Cutting tools run at thousands of revolutions per minute. On most machines a two-pole motor of the 3000 rpm class raises the speed through pulleys; on some, the tool sits directly on the motor shaft. Our range does not include CNC electro-spindles or the 200–300 Hz high-frequency motors that reach 18,000 rpm and more.

Quick stopping and starting

Safety requires the tool to stop quickly; the usual way is an electronic brake board in the machine panel that sends direct current through the winding for a moment. DRG does not offer a brake motor with a built-in mechanical brake. Star-delta starting is common on large saw and ripping motors; the method is explained on the star-delta starting page.

Dust, chips and connection dimensions

A motor whose fins fill with chips runs hot; our IP55 motors are dust-protected but need regular cleaning. An explosive dust zone (silo, filter) may require an Ex-certified motor; DRG standard motors are not sold with that certificate. Nor do we offer single-phase motors. For a replacement, read off the old plate its power, speed, voltage and star or delta wiring, then measure frame number, mounting, shaft with its key, the flange and whatever drives the tool (pulley or coupling); we check all of it against the machine documents, and the fit is confirmed only when everything agrees. For extraction fan motors see our Fan Motors category.

The DRG range and motors suited to wood machines

B) Our range consists of three-phase IEC induction motors, built in aluminium between 0.25 and 11 kW and in cast iron between 0.55 and 355 kW, with 6, 4 or 2 poles (1000/1500/3000 rpm); foot, flange and combined mountings (B3, B5, B14, B34, B35) as well as vertical forms can be ordered. Most of the catalogue ranges above fall within it. Sample models (current at 400 V):
