In a marble and natural stone plant an electric motor works at every step where a quarry block becomes a slab and the slab becomes a finished piece: the blade, wire, gang saw frame, polishing head, belt and pump are all turned by a three-phase motor. This category is about the motors used on those machines, not the machines themselves, and helps you choose the right one.
DRG Motor is a manufacturer, supplier and seller of electric motors. We do not sell machines, gearboxes, hydraulic units, pump casings, drives (inverters), electrospindles or servos; what we supply is the standard IEC electric motor fitted to these machines. Models are listed on Buy Electric Motors Online.
From quarry to slab: which motor at which stage?
The stone passes through the following machines in turn. Each stage loads its motor in a different way.

Cutting the block: bridge, block, gang saw and wire
In the quarry a diamond wire saw frees the block from the rock face; its main motor turns the pulley that drives the wire. In the plant the block is sliced on a multi-blade block cutter or a gang saw. On a gang saw one large motor drives the blade frame back and forth through a flywheel and connecting rod; high inertia and a heavy start define that motor. A bridge saw cuts a slab placed on its table in any direction with a single blade.
Calibrating, honing and polishing
The calibrating line evens slab thickness, while honing and polishing lines bring up the surface. Each head has its own motor, most of them vertical; belt and bridge oscillation are handled by separate small motors.
Surface finishes, sizing and edges
Ageing, brushing and flaming or blasting give texture. The sizing line splits slabs into strips and lengths, head cutting trims strip ends, and edge and chamfer machines shape profiles. Many small and medium motors work side by side on these machines.
Resin, epoxy, handling and water
Resin and epoxy lines have conveyor, mixer and drying fan motors. Slabs are moved by roller conveyors, transfer tables and vacuum loaders. The whole plant shares one need, water: cooling, circulation and slurry pump motors run all day.

Motor power on marble machines on the market
A) Sample figures from maker catalogues (they vary by machine; the exact value is on the machine plate):
| Machine group | Motor seen | Single / total | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quarry diamond wire saw | 55 kW, 1000 rpm | Main motor; 1.5 kW travel extra | maker data sheet |
| Block cutter (vertical + horizontal blade) | 110 kW + 18.5 kW | Two blade motors; 144 kW total | maker catalogue |
| Gang saw (80 blades) | 110 kW | Main motor; 132 kW installed | same catalogue |
| Bridge saw | 15–31.2 kW | Blade motor | four makers |
| Calibrating and polishing line | 18.5 kW / 7.5–15 kW | Per head | two makers |
| Sizing and head cutting | 5.5–22 kW | Per blade or arbor | five makers |
B) Where DRG fits: every single-motor figure in the table stays below the 355 kW limit, so standard ratings are covered by our cast iron models. Intermediate ratings such as 31.2 kW, electrospindles and 8-pole motors are outside our range.
Common points in motor selection
Power, speed and mounting change from machine to machine; no figure holds for every machine. Before we call a motor suitable, we check each item below against the existing nameplate and whatever drawings the builder supplied:
- kW, speed, voltage and connection (star/delta)
- frame height, mounting form, shaft and keyway, flange dimensions
- coupling, pulley or gearbox connection
- where the motor sits in water and slurry
Water, slurry and dust
In wet cutting, water and stone dust turn into slurry. IP55 protects against water jets; keep the frame clear of slurry pools, point the cable gland downwards and wash the fins clean. On wet floors, earthing must be done by a qualified electrician.
Speed control and starting
Belt, bridge and feed speeds are set by an inverter on most machines; drives are not in the DRG range, but our motors can run on one. Gang saw and large blade motors start heavily; from 4 kW upward the 400/690 V winding of our motors allows a star-delta start.
The DRG range: what is in, what is not
| Feature | In the DRG range | Not in the range | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power and frame | Aluminium 0.25–11 kW, cast iron 0.55–355 kW | Above 355 kW, medium voltage | 3-phase asynchronous IEC motor |
| Speed | 3000 / 1500 / 1000 rpm (2/4/6 poles) | 8 poles and slower | low speeds come from a gearbox |
| Mounting | B3, B5, B14, B34, B35; V1/V3/V5/V6 | Special long shaft, special flange | stated in the order |
| Protection and site | IP55 | Brake, submersible, electrospindle, servo | motor stays outside ovens, chosen with the ambient temperature |
Vibration motors form a product family of their own and a standard motor cannot stand in for one; read our vibration motors article. Stone cutting and stone crushing are different jobs too; for crushing plant motors see stone crushing plant motors.

Frequently asked questions
What should I look at first when choosing a marble machine motor?
The old motor’s nameplate: kW, speed and voltage are on it. Mounting method and shaft size come next.
Which protection class for a natural stone processing machine motor?
Our motors are IP55. For a position directly under water or slurry, review where the motor sits together with the machine builder.
