An inventory is drawn up by seeing each motor where it is installed and writing its nameplate data and dimensions on a standard form. The aim is not just a head count; it is to find the right spare at the moment of failure, to plan the replacement budget and to base energy decisions on data.

DRG-132M-4 7.5 kW 1500 rpm aluminium frame DRG three-phase motor – building a motor inventory

Fields to record for each motor

  • Identity: internal plant number, the line and machine it is on, the panel it is fed from
  • Nameplate: brand, kW, speed, voltage and connection, current, frequency, protection class, serial number
  • Dimensions: IEC frame number, shaft diameter and length, mounting arrangement (foot, flange), flange type
  • Drive: coupling, belt and pulley or gearbox; pulley diameter if applicable
  • Use: estimated annual hours, starting method, use of a drive
  • History: dates of rewinding, bearing replacement and failures

How to work on site

Attach a durable number tag to each motor and photograph its nameplate under the same number. On motors whose nameplate cannot be read, the frame number and shaft dimensions are measured by hand and noted; these motors are flagged separately in the list. Occupational safety rules must be followed while reading nameplates and taking measurements; if you need to approach the motor to measure, the machine must be stopped and isolated.

Making the list usable

When you gather the records in a table and sort them by power, speed and frame number, you can see which dimensional group dominates the plant. This table shows spare needs, simplification opportunities and replacement priority all at once.

Keeping it up to date

An inventory is not a one-off job. Every replacement, rewind or relocation must be entered on the same row; when a motor's old number moves with it to a new machine, the location field must be updated.

For motors in the inventory with missing nameplate data, you can compare the dimensions with DRG technical drawings and assess possible corresponding models from the power and speed list in the shop.
