It can make sense if the motor is technically sound and suits the power, speed, mounting and ambient conditions of the new machine. However, once the adaptation labour, extra parts and the motor's remaining life are taken into account, a new motor is sometimes the less troublesome and more predictable solution.

DRG-132M-4K 11 kW 1500 rpm aluminium frame DRG three-phase motor – reusing an old motor on another machine

First establish the motor's health

Why it was taken off its previous machine matters. If it was removed because of a load increase or a line change, the motor is generally sound. If it was removed because of a failure, overheating or rewinding, it should not be fitted elsewhere before insulation is measured, the bearings are checked and shaft runout is inspected.

Checking suitability for the new position

  • Power: does it meet the new machine's need; if it is much too large, low-load problems begin.
  • Speed: is the number of poles right, and if not, can it be compensated with the pulley ratio.
  • Dimensions: do the shaft height, foot holes, flange and shaft fit the machine.
  • Voltage: is the connection on the nameplate compatible with the supply of the new panel; this assessment belongs to qualified electrical staff.
  • Environment: is the new location dustier, damper or hotter.

Comparing the cost

Add up the base, pulley, coupling and labour that relocation will require; to this, add whether the motor will soon need bearings or a rewind. Compare this total with the price and installation of a new motor. If operating hours in the new position are low and little adaptation is needed, reuse generally comes out ahead.

A good middle way

A sound motor that does not quite fit the new position can also be kept in store as a spare for machines in the same dimensional group. That way the capital is put to use and a quick response becomes possible in a breakdown.

If a new motor is preferred, you can choose the right frame by checking dimensional fit against the dimensions on product pages such as the 4 kW 3000 rpm aluminium frame model.
