The resistance of electric motors to dust and water is expressed by the IP (Ingress Protection) rating defined in IEC 60529. Our standard industrial motors are rated IP55, which means they are protected against harmful ingress of dust and against water jets from any direction.

How to read an IP code

The first digit of the IP code indicates protection against solid objects and dust, the second against water:

  • First digit 5: dust-protected; dust is not fully excluded but cannot enter in amounts that would impair operation.
  • First digit 6: dust-tight; no dust enters.
  • Second digit 4: protection against splashing water from any direction.
  • Second digit 5: protection against water jets from any direction.
  • Second digit 6: protection against powerful water jets.
  • Second digit 7: protection against temporary immersion under defined conditions.

An IP55 motor can therefore be used safely in dusty workshops and on sites exposed to rain, while IP56 or IP66 is considered for areas washed down heavily or exposed to severe water, such as ship decks.

What provides the protection?

The protection level relies on the sealing faces of the frame and end shields, shaft seals, the terminal box gasket and cable glands. During installation, the gland must match the cable diameter, the terminal box lid must be closed properly, and condensation drain holes must sit at the lowest point for the chosen mounting position. Renewing worn seals and gaskets during maintenance keeps the original IP level.

Harsher environments

For more demanding environments, solutions with higher IP ratings can be offered. Outdoor motors exposed to direct sun and rain may benefit from a protective canopy, and anti-condensation heaters can be considered where condensation is a risk. IP55 protection allows our motors to work safely for a long time in dusty, humid and outdoor conditions.
