On a mobile machine, motor weight has a direct effect on the machine's resistance to tipping, the load on wheels and chassis, how easily it can be moved by hand or vehicle, and how well it copes with road vibration. For this reason, choosing a lighter frame for the same power and speed matters more than on a fixed bench.

DRG-100L-6 1.5 kW 1000 rpm aluminium-frame DRG three-phase motor – motor weight on a mobile machine

Where is the weight felt?

  • Centre of gravity: The motor usually sits at one end of the machine and high up; a heavy frame increases the machine's tendency to tip over.
  • Wheels and axle: On small-wheeled carts, extra load strains the wheel hubs and chassis welds.
  • Trailer and towing: On towed machines, the total weight and the load on the drawbar are limited.
  • Transport and lifting: On machines loaded onto a van or carried by two people, even a few kilograms make a difference.
  • Vibration: A heavy mass shaken on the road applies greater force to the fixing bolts.

Choosing the frame material

In the DRG range, aluminium-frame models cover 0.25–11 kW; for the same power and frame number they are lighter than the cast iron model. The cast iron frame series runs from 0.55 kW to 355 kW and offers a sturdier construction against impact. Above 11 kW, cast iron is the only frame option. Confirm the exact weight from the model information; when deciding, weigh the difference between the two frames against your machine's carrying capacity.

Points to watch on site besides weight

Because a mobile machine works in different places, a three-phase supply may not be available at every location. In addition, protecting the motor from rain on a machine left outdoors and the voltage drop on a long supply cable should be assessed separately. These needs are common on portable machines such as log splitters; you can look at the motor options suited to log splitters.

If lightness is your priority, review the aluminium-frame motor family and, for example, the 3 kW 1500 rpm aluminium model, and compare them with the other options in the shop.
