On most IEC motors it is possible: the terminal box sits on a base bolted to the frame and on some designs can be rotated in 90-degree steps; on others there is a gland entry on both sides of the box and the unused side is closed with a blanking plug. Which option applies depends on the model; at DRG it is enough to ask about the model you intend to buy before ordering.

Why does it matter?

If the cable entry faces a wall, the machine body or a guard, the cable is bent sharply, the gland is strained and the seal is compromised. A cable that does not enter from below can carry water running along it straight into the box. IP55 protection applies only when the box cover, its gasket and the glands are correctly fitted.

Do not confuse box orientation with box position

Whether the box is on top of the motor or on its side depends on the mounting arrangement and the frame design; this is not changed on site. The point here is only which way the cable opening of the same box faces. If the box is on top but the cable comes from the wrong side, this is usually solved by rotating it or using the opposite gland entry. If the box needs to be on an entirely different face of the motor, that is a question to ask before ordering and may not be possible on every model.

Points to watch when changing it

  • The work must be done with the power off and locked out; any work on internal connections depends on the motor nameplate, the maker's documentation and the judgement of qualified electrical personnel.
  • The gasket must not slip out of place; if it is crushed or torn, replace it.
  • The gland must suit the outer diameter of the cable; an unused entry must be closed with a suitable plug.
  • The connections inside the box must not be put under tension; the cable length must allow for the rotation.
  • Outdoors, the cable should form a drip loop below the entry so that water does not run into the box.

Stating it in the order makes things easier

It is enough to describe the direction the cable comes from on the machine as "from the right / left / below" looking at the motor from the shaft end, and send a photo. To see the frame dimensions, refer to the technical drawings; for model selection, see the three-phase motor shop.
