It does, but not directly. In a dry-rotor pump the motor never touches the water; heat reaches the motor by conduction from the pump casing to the flange and along the shaft. What really matters is the temperature of the motor's cooling air: a cramped, hot boiler room can put more strain on the motor than the water temperature itself.

How heat reaches the motor
- Shaft: The pump shaft, in contact with the hot fluid, warms the drive-end bearing through the coupling or the common connection.
- Flange: On close-coupled and inline pumps the motor flange sits directly on the pump casing, so heat transfer is more pronounced.
- Ambient air: A motor with IC411 cooling uses its own fan to blow the surrounding air over the frame. If that air is already warm, the cooling effect is reduced.
Conditions assumed by the motor nameplate
The rated power on the nameplate applies to a given cooling air temperature and an altitude close to sea level. Above these limits derating may be needed; the values should be taken from the motor documentation. Class F insulation gives the winding a thermal margin, but it should not be relied on alone to compensate for a hot environment. The topic is covered in detail in the article on temperature rise and insulation class.
Details often overlooked in a boiler room
On vertically mounted inline pumps the motor may sit in the layer of hot air above the boiler. A fan cover placed too close to a wall also blocks the airflow. Because condensation can form on the frame as it cools when the system is shut down, the terminal box gaskets must be kept in good condition.
Wet-rotor circulators
In small domestic circulation pumps the motor and pump share a single housing; these are not replaced with a standard IEC motor but renewed as a complete unit.
Information needed for selection
Once the water temperature, the summer and winter air temperature in the plant room, the mounting orientation and the pump flange size are known, you can match them against the criteria on the closed-circuit circulation pump motors page; models with the right power and speed are listed in the three-phase motor shop.
