If there is a separate coupling and a common baseplate between the pump and the motor, the motor is foot-mounted; if the pump casing is bolted onto the motor's front end shield, the motor is flange-mounted. On vertical pumps the motor is fitted by its flange with the shaft pointing downwards. Recognising the pump type largely settles the question.

Typical connection by pump type
| Pump design | Motor connection | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| End-suction horizontal pump on a baseplate with coupling | Foot-mounted (B3) | Shaft height and foot hole spacing |
| Close-coupled horizontal pump | Flange-mounted; feet are sometimes used as well (B35) | Flange type and shaft length |
| Inline pump | Flange-mounted, vertical | The motor weight bears on the flange |
| Vertical multistage pump | Flange-mounted, shaft down | Whether the pump or the motor carries the axial load |
How can you tell on site yourself?
- Look between the motor and the pump: if there is a visible coupling and guard and the motor sits on its own base, the connection is foot-mounted; on vertical pumps the motor is flange-mounted even though the coupling is visible inside the lantern.
- Check whether there is a concrete or steel base with bolts under the motor, or whether the motor is suspended.
- If there is a directly bolted interface between the pump casing and the motor's front end shield, measure the flange size.
What to measure on a flange-mounted motor
Whether the flange has through holes (FF) or tapped holes (FT), the spigot diameter, the bolt circle and the shaft length; on close-coupled pumps the impeller is often mounted straight onto the motor shaft, so the shaft length and keyway are critical. The mounting codes are explained in the B3, B5 and B35 ordering guide.
Confirmation before ordering
The mounting arrangement and flange size should be stated in writing in the order, and whether a model can be supplied in the required design should be confirmed before purchase. Once the pump type is known, you can match it against the criteria on the inline pump motor and end-suction pump motor pages.
