Water and slurry affect not the motor's power but its durability and cooling. During cutting, the water sprayed onto the blade mixes with stone dust and splashes onto the motor surface, the fan cover and the shaft exit; over time it dries and forms a crust. This is why the degree of protection, mounting position, sealing and maintenance routine are as important as power in the selection.

Problems wet slurry causes in a motor

  • Slurry building up on the fan cover grille blocks the airflow and the motor overheats.
  • Abrasive slurry reaching the shaft seal wears it out, and moisture then works its way to the bearing.
  • If the terminal box cover and cable entry are not well sealed, water seeps into the connection compartment.
  • Condensation forms in a motor that cools down overnight, weakening the winding insulation.

The limits of IP55

IP55 means protection against dust entering in harmful quantities and against water jets from any direction. Pressure washing, standing under a continuous curtain of water or being buried in slurry are outside this scope. The motor should be positioned as far as possible from the splash zone of the cutting area, with the front of the fan cover grille kept clear; a splash guard should be added if necessary. Moisture and corrosion measures are explained in the tropicalisation article.

Cutting load and power

Power is determined by blade diameter, depth of cut, stone hardness and feed rate. Hard stones such as granite are fed more slowly than marble, and the load profile also changes. Bridge saws, block cutters and calibrating machines have feed and water pump motors in addition to the main spindle motor; each is assessed separately.

Maintenance and ordering notes

The outer surface of the frame should be cleaned regularly, dried slurry crust scraped off, and the condition of the seals and bearings checked periodically. Details by application are covered on the bridge saw machine motors page, and for cutting line pumps on the water pump motors page. Suitable cast iron models are listed in the shop.
