In a cotton gin, cotton dust and short airborne fibres build up on the outside of the motor and obstruct cooling; the problem usually arises less from dust getting inside the motor than from clogged fins and fan cover. Alongside the degree of protection against dust, the selection should also plan where the motor will be placed and how often it will be cleaned.

Why is lint build-up more dangerous?

Unlike fine mineral dust, cotton lint clings to the fan cover grille like felt and quickly closes off the air intake. As airflow falls the frame heats up, and lint accumulating on a hot surface is a fire hazard. Areas where dust is dense and an explosive atmosphere risk has been assessed require certified motors; such motors are not in DRG’s standard range. Zone classification should be carried out by the plant’s health and safety officer.

Points to check when selecting the motor

  • Degree of protection: IP55 limits harmful dust ingress; it does not prevent build-up on the outer surface.
  • Power margin: On machines running day and night through the season, a borderline choice combined with a partly clogged fan leads to overheating.
  • Frame and fin design: An easy-to-clean surface and an accessible fan cover shorten maintenance time.
  • Belt drive: Belt and pulley guards should be closed so that fibres cannot wrap around the belts.

Layout and cleaning plan

It helps to place motors out of the lint stream as far as possible, in the clean-air zone at the side or below the gin rather than above it. Cleaning the fan cover and fins with compressed air at the start of each shift, keeping the aspiration system working properly and checking bearings before the season should be a regular routine. Overheating caused by dirt is not covered by the warranty; keeping cleaning records is in the operator’s interest.

For the aspiration and dust collection side, the dust collection fan motors page gives ideas; general information on farm machinery is under agricultural machinery electric motors, and suitable power ratings are in the three-phase motor shop.
