The online electric motor sales page has three filters: frame material, motor power (kW) and speed/number of poles. Once you select power and speed, only a few cards remain out of 120 models; you make the final decision using the dimensions on the product page.

DRG-802-4 0.75 kW 1500 rpm aluminium frame DRG three-phase motor – finding a motor by power and speed in the shop

In what order should you use the filters?

  1. Power: Select the kW value on the old motor's nameplate. If the nameplate only shows HP, multiply by about 0.746 and look at the nearest standard kW step.
  2. Speed: The on-load speed on the nameplate is slightly below the synchronous speed; e.g. if you read 1440 rpm, choose 1500 – 4p; for 2850, 3000 – 2p; for 960, 1000 – 6p.
  3. Frame material: Between 0.25 and 11 kW, aluminium and cast iron versions may both be offered; from 15 kW upwards, the range is cast iron.

No nameplate?

You need to start from what the machine requires. The motor selection wizard can be a starting point for estimating the shaft power and the required speed. In a pulley drive, the machine speed is calculated from the motor speed and the ratio of the pulley diameters (n_machine = n_motor × D_motor / D_machine).

Verify on the page what you see on the card

The listing card gives only a summary: HP equivalent, IP rating, frame number, current at 400 V and torque. Moving from the card to the product page shows the shaft height, the shaft diameter, the shaft length, the spacing of the foot holes and the overall length. Compare these values with the old motor; the same kW and speed may come in two different frames (e.g. two models with 132S and 112M frames for 5.5 kW 1500 rpm), in which case the mounting dimensions also differ.

Putting two models side by side

You can add the models you are undecided between to the comparison table with the “Compare” option on the cards. The 3 kW 1500 rpm DRG-100L2-4 aluminium model, for instance, can be weighed against its cast iron counterpart in terms of dimensions and technical data this way.
