If the 2.2 kW GAMAK electric motor on your machine needs renewing, the most common mistake is ordering by power alone. Two 2.2 kW motors can sit in different frames when their speed classes differ, and may not fit the existing base or flange. This article shows how power and speed affect mounting, which dimensions to take and how DRG options are compared against them.
At 2.2 kW, the number of poles changes the frame
In the GAMAK technical catalogue, the 2.2 kW three-phase IE3 aluminium series lists the two-pole type AGM3EL 90 L 2b in a 90L frame with a 24×50 mm shaft, and the four-pole type AGM3EL 100 L 4a in a 100L frame with a 28×60 mm shaft. So at the same power, both shaft height and shaft diameter change between the 3000 and 1500 classes. The catalogue's 2- and 4-pole cast-iron tables start at 5.5 kW; the types at this power are listed in the aluminium-frame tables, and the catalogue states that aluminium-frame motors have detachable feet. Check your motor's frame material from the type code on the nameplate and from the housing itself.
The DRG range shows a similar picture: the DRG-90L-2 has a 90L frame and 2895 rpm, the DRG-100L1-4 a 100L frame and 1450 rpm, and the DRG-112M-6 a 112M frame and 955 rpm nominal speed. All three are 2.2 kW, so the power value alone does not tell you which frame is needed; the speed class must also be read from the nameplate.
Speed: keeping the machine's output
The nominal speed on the nameplate sets the machine's output speed. On a belt drive, fitting a 1450 rpm motor instead of a 2895 rpm one roughly halves the speed; on a coupled pump, head and flow change from the outset. Changing speed class is sometimes a deliberate choice, but then pulley ratio, torque demand and frame must be reconsidered together. Looking at rated torque, the DRG-90L-2 gives 7.26 Nm and the DRG-100L1-4 14.5 Nm; that is how large the torque difference is at the same power.
Mounting form and dimension comparison
The GAMAK catalogue lists B3, B5, B14, B34 and B35 mounting forms for this series. If your GAMAK electric motor is foot-mounted (B3), the base holes and shaft height matter; if flange-mounted (B5 large flange or B14 small flange), the flange outer diameter, spigot diameter and pitch circle decide. In B35/B34 arrangements, where foot and flange are used together, both groups must match. B3, B5 and B35 dimensions of DRG motors are shown below; a B14 option also exists, but its dimensions are confirmed at order.
| Dimension (mm) | DRG-90L-2 | DRG-100L1-4 | Where to measure on the old motor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shaft height H | 90 | 100 | From foot base to shaft axis |
| Foot holes A × B | 140 × 125 | 160 × 140 | Bolt spacing on the base |
| Shaft D × E | 24 × 50 | 28 × 60 | Coupling or pulley hub |
| B5 flange P / N / M | 200 / 130 / 165 | 250 / 180 / 215 | Flange outer diameter, spigot, pitch circle |
The values in the table come from the DRG catalogue. Measure the same points on your old motor; suitability cannot be stated until the dimensions are compared and checked. Detailed drawings are on the DRG motor technical drawings page.
Once you have the measurements, send them with a nameplate photo via WhatsApp; DRG MOTOR carries out the comparison with this data.
Connection and operating conditions
In the DRG MOTOR online store, models up to 3 kW are listed as 230/400 V and models of 4 kW and above as 400/690 V; any special voltage or different frequency requirement should be stated separately. Note the voltage pair on your old motor's nameplate and the starting arrangement in the panel; whether the connection needs changing must be decided by qualified technical personnel. If the motor starts and stops frequently, runs on an inverter or works in a dusty or humid environment, mention this too; DRG motors are rated IP55 and for −15…+40 °C ambient.
DRG options that can be assessed
DRG Motor is a manufacturer, supplier and seller of electric motors. Examples that can be assessed for 2.2 kW:
- DRG-90L-2 – 3000 class, 2895 rpm, 90L, shaft 24×50 mm
- DRG-100L1-4 – 1500 class, 1450 rpm, 100L, shaft 28×60 mm
- DRG-112M-6 – 1000 class, 955 rpm, 112M, shaft 28×60 mm
Other aluminium-frame models are on the Aluminum Housing Three Phase Induction Motor page, and the full range is in the DRG online store.
Frequently asked questions
My old motor is 2.2 kW, 1500 class; can I fit a 3000 class motor?
Since the machine's speed and torque would change, this is not a simple swap. Whether it is suitable cannot be said until pulley ratio, load demand and frame dimensions are reassessed.
My motor is B35 but bolted only by the flange; do the feet matter?
If the feet are not used, the flange dimensions decide. Still, if foot mounting may be needed later, it helps to send the foot dimensions as well.
How should I send dimensions for my B14 small-flange motor?
Give the flange outer diameter, spigot diameter, pitch circle and thread size of the holes. DRG offers a B14 option, but because its dimensions are confirmed at order, the comparison is made using the values you send.
Information to send DRG MOTOR
- Nameplate photo and full type code (e.g. the code including frame and pole data)
- Power 2.2 kW, nominal speed on the nameplate and voltage/frequency
- Mounting form: B3, B5, B14, B34 or B35
- For foot mounting, A × B hole spacing and shaft height H
- For flange mounting, flange outer diameter, spigot diameter, pitch circle
- Shaft diameter × length and key width
- Whether a coupling or pulley is used, machine type and operating time
Send DRG MOTOR your existing motor's nameplate photo, mounting dimensions and machine details; the suitable option is then assessed by reviewing technical data and operating conditions together.
