Cast iron frame low-kW electric motors offer a sturdier build than aluminium frames even in the small power range. In a power band usually associated with aluminium housings, cast iron is chosen because of the mechanical demands and vibration load of the environment the motor will work in.
Why Cast Iron at Low kW?
Motors between 0.55 and 7.5 kW are mostly produced with aluminium frames, but where impact and vibration are heavy on conveyors, mixers and outdoor pumps, the cast iron frame stands out. Cast iron damps mechanical shock and reduces frame resonance.
Durability and Thermal Behaviour
Thanks to its mass, a cast iron frame spreads heat more steadily, preventing winding temperature from spiking under sudden loads. Combined with Class F insulation and IP55 protection, it delivers a long service life in dusty and humid conditions.
Speed and Mounting Options
Low-kW cast iron motors come in 2-pole 3000 rpm, 4-pole 1500 rpm and 6-pole 1000 rpm versions. B3 foot, B5 flange and B14 face mountings are selected to suit the machine, connecting directly to a 400 V / 50 Hz supply.
Specifying the Right Low-kW Motor
If the working environment is subject to vibration or impact, a cast iron frame is a sensible choice even at low power. DRG Motor supplies low-kW cast iron motors from stock; share your machine's load conditions to receive a quote for the right configuration.
