If you are considering a DRG MOTOR unit to replace your 5.5 kW GAMAK electric motor, the real question is not "which model" but "on what information the decision will be based". This article explains which options the DRG range includes at 5.5 kW, the steps of the comparison and which data you are asked to provide for the assessment.
Starting point: frame and material of the old motor
In the GAMAK technical catalogue, the 5.5 kW four-pole three-phase IE3 type is listed as AGM3EL 132 S 4a in an aluminium frame and GM3EL 132 S 4a in cast iron; the two-pole equivalent is 132 S 2a. In every case the frame is 132S and the shaft 38×80 mm. The catalogue's cast-iron 2- and 4-pole tables begin at this power, so at 5.5 kW your motor may be aluminium or cast iron. The type code on the nameplate and the look of the frame (detachable feet on aluminium, feet cast with the frame on cast iron) help you tell.
What does the DRG range cover at 5.5 kW?
DRG Motor is a manufacturer, supplier and seller of electric motors. At 5.5 kW there are three-phase asynchronous IEC motors in the 1000, 1500 and 3000 classes, with aluminium and cast-iron frames. In the DRG MOTOR online store, models up to 3 kW are listed as 230/400 V and models of 4 kW and above as 400/690 V; any special voltage or different frequency requirement should be stated separately. These motors come with IP55 protection, class F insulation and IC411 cooling; dimensions for B3, B5 and B35 mounting are in the catalogue, while B14 dimensions are confirmed at order. The table below shows four examples that can be taken into assessment:
| Model | Frame / material | Shaft D × E (mm) | Nominal speed (rpm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| DRG-132S-4 | 132S / aluminium | 38 × 80 | 1460 |
| DRG-132S-4 | 132S / cast iron | 38 × 80 | 1460 |
| DRG-112M-4K | 112M / aluminium, compact | 28 × 60 | 1460 |
| DRG-132S1-2 | 132S / cast iron | 38 × 80 | 2930 |
The table is not a recommendation list but a starting point for comparison. The compact DRG-112M-4K, with the same 5.5 kW and the same 1500 class, has a 28×60 mm shaft that does not match a coupling expecting 38×80 mm; even with the same power and speed class, the mechanical connection must be checked separately.
Brake, Ex marking and special features
This assessment covers the selection of the electric motor to be connected to the existing equipment. If your motor has a brake, a separately driven fan or a drive integrated into the motor, say so as well; these features change the assessment. If the nameplate of your old GAMAK electric motor carries an Ex (explosion-proof) mark, or the motor works in a special application such as smoke extraction: these applications carry specific certification requirements; the certification requirement must be checked separately before selecting a motor. If a non-standard shaft or frame is involved, send its dimensions and a photo in your first message.
Comparison steps
DRG MOTOR's assessment roughly follows this order: power, nominal speed, voltage and frequency are read from the nameplate; mounting form and frame code are identified; shaft and flange/foot dimensions are compared with DRG catalogue values; finally, the machine's load, starting method and ambient conditions are reviewed. If the old motor stopped because of a fault, the cause is also considered at this last step. DRG motors are rated for −15…+40 °C ambient and altitudes up to 1000 m; mention any use beyond these limits. Whether the connection and protection arrangement in the panel suits the new motor must be assessed by qualified technical personnel.
To start these steps, you can send the nameplate photo and a short description of the machine via WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions
My old motor had a cast-iron frame; can an aluminium-frame motor be assessed?
It can be assessed if the dimensions and operating conditions match; however, conditions such as heavy vibration, shocks or a harsh environment may influence the frame choice. The decision is made together with machine and ambient information.
My nameplate says IE3; should I report it?
Yes, include the IE class on the nameplate to describe the existing motor fully. The selection is still made together with power, speed, dimensions and operating conditions.
My motor runs on an inverter; can a DRG motor be assessed?
Whether use with your existing inverter is suitable must be assessed by qualified technical personnel, reviewing drive settings and the application together. State this from the start.
When does a compact model come into question?
It may come up when space on the machine is tight and the shaft and transmission element can be rearranged. If you want to keep the existing 38×80 mm connection, standard-frame models are looked at first.
Information to send for the assessment
- Nameplate photo and type code; whether the frame is aluminium or cast iron
- Power 5.5 kW, nominal speed on the nameplate, voltage pair and frequency
- Mounting form and frame code (e.g. 132S)
- Shaft diameter × length; foot or flange dimensions
- Non-standard features such as a brake, Ex mark or special shaft
- Machine type, load and starting method, inverter use
- Ambient conditions and the old motor's failure cause
Once this information reaches DRG MOTOR, the model that can be assessed is identified by considering the technical data and the machine's operating conditions together.
