The IE3 series is the part of the DRG MOTOR range bought by plants that already know their annual running hours. Against an IE2 unit of the same rating the saving is 8–10% of the energy the motor draws, and that is a figure which can be checked on a bill instead of argued about.

What the 8–10% Means on a Bill

“Premium Efficiency” describes how much of the electricity entering the motor leaves it as shaft power. The 8–10% an IE3 motor does not lose against IE2 never reaches the meter, and on a drive working two shifts it accumulates faster than the price gap between the two classes.

Copper windings, an optimised rotor and stator geometry and a housing that carries heat away are what produce that figure. The same construction holds the winding cooler under continuous load, which is why the class marking and the service life tend to move together.

What the Class Brings With It

  • Lower energy draw: 8–10% less than an IE2 motor of the same rating.

  • Longer service life: cooler windings age more slowly under heavy load.

  • Wider maintenance intervals: less heat means less frequent bearing and insulation work.

  • Steadier running: quiet operation on lines where the motor sits near operators.

  • Lower emissions: electricity that is never drawn is the cleanest saving available.

Machines That Justify the Class

Factory lines, assembly and packaging systems, processing machinery, pump and fan groups, HVAC plant, conveyors, presses and compressors all take IE3 motors. The class earns its price on the ones that run all shift; on a machine started twice a day the saving is real but slow.

What It Changes on the Cost Sheet

Two lines move. Electricity falls by the 8–10% figure, and maintenance falls because the motor runs cooler. Installation advice and after-sales support are what keep either of those from being lost to a wrong mounting or a missed greasing interval.

Checking a Rating

Give the rating, the speed and the hours the machine runs each day, and the IE3 model that fits can be confirmed with its plate data. Where the hours are low we will say so and quote the lower class instead.
