Three efficiency classes sit at the top of IEC 60034-30: IE3, IE4 and the IE5 ultra premium level. Choosing between them is arithmetic rather than preference, because the hours a motor turns each year decide whether the price difference ever comes back.

How the Three Classes Separate

IE3 is the working baseline in most plants. IE4 sits one step above it. IE5 marks the lowest loss level the standard currently defines, and the step from IE4 to IE5 is worth about 20% less loss for the same shaft power.

Reading the Hours Before Reading the Class

A large pump station or a compressor that never stops piles up thousands of hours a year, and there the IE5 premium returns quickly. A fan running one shift a day recovers the same premium far more slowly, which is where IE3 or IE4 remains the sound pick.

Where the Premium Is Never Recovered

Standby units, machines that start a few times a shift and drives that idle most of the day rarely gather enough hours for the higher class to pay for itself. Buying IE5 for that duty ties up capital against losses that were small to begin with.

What Is Measured Before Shipment

Every motor is checked for insulation, vibration and balance, efficiency and cos φ, and behaviour under load before it leaves the plant. The efficiency recorded in that test is what fixes the class stamped on the nameplate, so the class ordered is the class measured.
