IE5 Ultra Premium is the highest efficiency class defined by the IEC 60034-30-1 standard, describing motors in which losses are reduced to a minimum. In continuously running plants with expensive energy, IE5 class motors aim to keep the grid energy drawn for every kilowatt of mechanical power produced as low as possible.

Why Is IE5 the Top Class?

The efficiency classes start at IE1 Standard and rise through IE2 High, IE3 Premium and IE4 Super Premium to IE5 Ultra Premium. At each step the motor's losses at rated load fall; in IE5 these losses are reduced markedly compared with IE3, targeting the highest efficiency that is practically achievable.

The Design That Makes IE5 Possible

Reaching this class calls for larger conductor cross-sections, low-loss thin laminations and an optimised magnetic design. Some IE5 motors are built with permanent-magnet assistance to remove the slip-related rotor losses, pushing efficiency beyond the limits of a plain asynchronous machine.

Which Plants Justify IE5?

The extra efficiency of IE5 makes sense in applications that run thousands of hours a year in S1 continuous duty and carry a high energy cost. Large pump stations, compressed-air compressors and continuous process fans are the loads that benefit most from the lowest losses IE5 offers.

Before Investing in IE5

IE5 gives its best return not in every application but in plants with high running hours and energy cost. As an Izmir-based supplier, DRG Motor evaluates your high-efficiency needs together with your duty profile to help you choose the most suitable option among IE4 and IE5 class solutions.
