There is one measurement behind every claim made for the long life of an IE3 Premium motor: the temperature of the frame after an hour of steady work. A motor that loses less energy as heat runs cooler, and a cooler winding lasts longer. Everything else in this page is a way of checking that on a machine you already own.
The Measurement to Take First
Put a hand-held sensor on the frame of the motor being considered for replacement while it is running its normal duty, and note the reading and the ambient temperature in the same minute. That pair of numbers is the baseline. When an IE3 machine of the same rating goes onto the same work, the reading is taken again at the same point on the frame. The difference is the whole efficiency argument expressed in a unit anybody can read, and it also predicts how long the insulation and the grease will last.
What the Reading Means for the Winding
Class F insulation carries a stated margin over ambient, and the closer a winding sits to that margin the faster the varnish becomes brittle. On the 4-pole 1500 rpm machines that carry most of the working hours in a plant, the gap between a hot motor and a cool one of the same rating shows up as years of service rather than as a line on a datasheet. Under S1 continuous duty behind IP55 protection a motor settles at one temperature, and it is the cycling between hot and cold rather than the heat alone that opens cracks in the winding.
What Changes in the Service Schedule
Grease life falls away as the bearing housing gets hotter, so a regreasing interval written for an older, hotter machine is conservative once a cooler one replaces it. Rather than keeping the old interval out of habit, take the frame temperature after the change and set the schedule against it. The same logic applies to the rewind cycle: a motor that never reaches its thermal limit does not age on the calendar the way a hot one does.
What to Ask For Before Ordering
