The IE3 efficiency class is part of the international IEC 60034-30-1 standard that defines the energy efficiency of electric motors. Called "Premium efficiency," this class sets the minimum efficiency a motor must reach at a given power and speed.

The IE Classification

The standard classifies motors from IE1 to IE5: IE1 Standard, IE2 High, IE3 Premium, IE4 Super Premium and IE5 Ultra Premium. As the number rises, efficiency increases and losses fall.

What Does IE3 Mean?

An IE3-class motor does the same work using less energy than lower classes. This class has become a minimum requirement in many applications due to energy-efficiency regulation.

Why Does It Matter?

In continuously running motors the energy cost is high; the IE3 class lowers this cost and provides savings over the long term.
