The efficiency classes of electric motors show how little loss they incur doing the same work. The IEC 60034-30-1 standard defines these classes from IE1 to IE5, with IE3, IE4 and IE5 forming the upper tiers. DRG Motor helps you make the right choice among these three classes according to the running hours and energy targets of your application.

IE3 Premium

IE3 is the Premium efficiency class and is accepted as the mandatory minimum level across many power ranges. It reduces losses compared with a standard motor, offers a balanced purchase cost and is a common starting point for continuously running pumps, fans and conveyors.

IE4 Super Premium

IE4 goes a step beyond IE3 and lowers losses further. Through higher copper content and an optimised magnetic design, it markedly cuts the energy bill in plants with long running hours. The longer the operating time, the faster the extra cost of IE4 is recovered.

IE5 Ultra Premium

IE5, as the Ultra Premium class, targets the lowest possible loss. It is chosen for critical applications running around the clock where energy dominates operating expenditure. Although it carries the highest initial cost, it minimises the total cost of ownership under intensive use.

Which Class to Choose

The right class depends on the motor's annual running hours and the unit price of electricity. IE3 is sufficient for short-duration use, while IE4 or IE5 makes more sense for continuously running drives. Izmir-based DRG Motor assesses your load profile, recommends the suitable class and provides a current quotation.
